ASSEMBLY CONCURS WITH SENATE, BUDGET GOES TO GOVERNOR
Last night the Assembly voted 52-43 to concur with the changes the Senate made to the budget last Friday morning (see yesterday’s State Relations Update for more information). During the debate, several amendments were offered to the budget but all failed. Of interest to the University, Representative Mark Pocan (D-Madison) offered an amendment (Amendment 12) to restore funding for the UW System. That motion failed 58-38. Representative Robert Ziegelbauer (D-Manitowoc) offered an amendment (Amendment 1) to eliminate the requirement that non-represented employees contribute 1.5 percent of their salary to their retirement benefits. That motion failed 53-41.
The budget now goes to Governor Doyle for his signature and vetoes. The Governor has approximately three weeks to act on the budget.
